Performance, Narrative and Concept Music videos.

There are different types of music videos in the industry, here are the main 3 types:

Narrative Music video.

A narrative music video is basically a short movie with a song behind it. They often have stories behind them and little or no lip-syncing.

Paramore- The only exception

Bonnie Taylor - Total eclipse of the heart

Yolanda be cool - we no speak Americano

These are examples narrative music videos because there is no performance to it, but a story. There is no lip synchronising and there is no dancing or performing.

Performance music video

A performance music video has performance elements in it. This can include instruments or the main singer lip - syncing or dancing. It sows the artist in different settings such as gigs and studios.

An example of a performance music video is:

beyonce - single ladies

Biffy Clyro - Bubbles

Concept music videos.

Concept videos have become popular for music videos. These videos usually have theme to the song and can be series, humorous or both. The songs usually have humorous lyrics which are acted out and can contain lip - syncing. An Example of a concept music videos are:

boulevard of broken dreams - Green day

Steve archer (2004)

'' Often music videos will cut between a narrative and performance of the song by the band. in addition a carefully choreographed dance might be part of the artists performance or an extra aspect designed to aid visualisation and the 'repeatability' factor. Sometime the artists (especially the singer) will be a part of the story acting as a narrator and participant at the same time, but it is the lip-syncing close up and the miming of playing instruments that remains at the heart of music videos , as if to assure us that the band really can kick it.''

Pop music - Mood Board

This mood board represents pictures which relate to current pop music.
I used secondary sources from search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Ask to get a variety of different images. These images represent fast pace, and quirky feminine lifestyle.
I've used the colour pink allot in my mood board as pink is used allot in feminine pop music videos such as Katy perry - California girls.

I've also used images of a tea cup, cup cake, lolly pop, vintage flowers, vintage car, beach ball, and jewelry as seen in a lot of pop music videos. These connotations help the audience remember the song, I can use these sort of connotations in my music video so people will understand the story line better. These also represent fast pace lifestyle in the music video with high key lighting which represents happiness usually associated in pop songs, also the type of people likely to listen to pop are teenagers which usually mirror the lifestyle in pop videos which are fast faced.

I've used an autumn set scene in my mood board because I think this scene can relate to a lot of pop music songs. For example in the song: lily Allen: its not fair, and Katy perry: thinking of you these are set in an autumn like setting. I could use a setting like this in my music video as the audience will think of similar song like these, however they could then compare each video so that is a limitation.

Lady Gaga artist research

Lady GaGa was born in 1986 and is an American recording artists signed to stream line recording studios.
Lady GaGa released Fame (first album) in 2009, This reached number one in the UK, along with her first two singles, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" which also became massive international hits. She was later nominated for six Grammy Award nomination. This shows form he start of her career she has had Almighty success and is still going, whereas allot of artists fade out. I think it is because of her Electra dance style music and she is a very unique artists which is refreshing.

She captures many audiences of all ages with her upbeat music and crazy costumes which she is well known for!

Genre Research

What is genre?

Genre is a critical tool which helps us study texts and audience responses to texts by dividing them into categories based on common elements

David Duff
''Genre is a recurring type or category of text, as defined by structural, thematic, and/or functional criteria."

What are the different types of sub genres?

Steve Neale (1995) - "Genres are not 'systems', they are processes of systematization" i.e. they are dynamic and evolve over time.

All genres such as pop and rock have sub genres which are basically another genre within a genre for the audience to specify and have more of a specific choice. The sub genres can often vary very differently or just slightly.
So I've tried to establish the meaning of genre I will now start to look at the type of genre my group and I will use in our video, were starting to look at how were going to develop our music videos. After getting into out previous groups from AS with a new member to our group, Oyinda. We first started our research by looking at different genres. We didn't know there were so many genres, here are a few we found so far:

  • Pop

  • Rock

  • Dance

  • Classical

  • Rap

  • Electro

  • Indie

  • Country

  • Dubstep

  • Alternative

  • HipHop

  • Garage

  • Bashment

  • Jaz

  • Funkyhouse

What Genre attracts me the most?

I think pop genre attracts me the most for my music video, this is because we all listen to pop music and are familiar with new songs and pop artists. I like how pop genre has different

Pop music Research.

Pop music came from the Rock and Roll movement in the 1950s and came from the term 'popular music; popular music is associated more with a variety of ages whereas pop music is mainly aged at teenagers and young adults

... why is this?

Teenagers are usually the age group who have the most amount of 'throw away money' to buy non essentials such as DVD's and CD's, therefore when company's aim music at the younger generation they know they'll be receiving in return a big profit. Pop genre is everywhere in the music industry and targets teenagers and young adults through mediums like magazines, radio and adverts. It's often that the lyrics and videos reflect a teen life therefore we can relate to these songs, allot of contemporary pop songs are about love, romance, sex, drugs etc.

Pop music belongs to a number of genres therefore having a wide appeal to its audience. Since pop music was first generated it has absorbed influences from other genres.
For example early pop music took influences from ballads, gospel and soul music and Jazz.

What are the main generic characteristics of pop genre?

Musicologists often identify the following characteristics as typical of the pop music genre:

  • pop focuses more on recording, production, and technology, than performancee

  • conforms to trends

  • pop music encourages dancing

The medium of pop music is the song, lasting a few minutes, accompanied with a rhythm, and a structure. Common traits of pop songs are the verse, then the chorus then the verse again.

Pop songs often focus on cheesy lines, hooks, melodies and choruses to hook the consumer. The lyrics of pop songs focus on themes often associated with love and romantic relationships.

What Iconography does pop genre use?

I see Pop genre as being very quirky, fun and colorful. I think pop genre represents young fresh ideas well. You often associate random quirky objects such as cupcakes, teacups, bicycles, bows, and polka dots with contemporary pop videos. These connotations help you understand the video and song better and mirror the storyline behind the video.
